On tour: Woodchester Valley Vineyard

With pandemic restrictions lifting we’re visiting more of our fantastic West country producers and suppliers this summer.

Last week we visited one of our wine suppliers - Woodchester Valley Vineyard

Found in the Cotswolds, tucked away above the narrow lanes north of Nailsworth sits Woodchester Valley Vineyard.

The winery is state of the art with the aim of all of the technology being to produce wines with pure, crystalline fruit.

Our host Aaron, kicked us off with Woodchester’s Cotswold Classic Sparkling wine.

This is a dry and flavoursome wine, well positioned for the gap between Prosecco and Champagne.

A perfect drink for a warm evening, refreshing, clean and interesting.

Aaron then produced their 2019 Bacchus which our guests can find on our Wine List.

It is a relatively unknown grape type, which makes a delicious, pure, wine, on similar lines to a NZ sauvignon, crisp, with lots of fruit and balancing acidity. An ideal aperitif.

Then before setting off to see some of the vineyards and winery, we were treated to a glass of the Ortega Bacchus, which has had the benefit oak ageing to make a softer, richer and more complex wine.

The vineyards are some of the highest in the UK at an altitude of over 150 metres, sitting on the stony tops of the Cotswolds fossil filled limestone.

It was amazing to contemplate that where we stood on the top of a sunny hill had once been the floor of the sea. Fossil hunters can find ammonite and shell fossils amoungst the edges of the Vineyard.

As the sun went down, we finished our visit with a glass of the delicious Cotswold Sparkling Rose, dry but rich with the scent of muscatel and rose. Summer in a glass.

A huge thanks to Aaron and the Woodchester team for hosting us! Be sure to check out their wines, tours and tastings online.

The team have also created a small handful of beautiful rooms with stunning views across the valley.
